Jet Engines…On Wheels

One man’s dream is another man’s quest. For Rich Hanna, the quest for attaining excellence is no dream. Rich adds a whole new meaning to the song “Get your motor running”. Rich is not the ordinary ‘cut the grass on the weekend’ type guy. He spends his spare time rocketing his jet propelled ‘GOJO Industries’ sponsored ‘GOJO Firebird’ Pontiac Jet Funny Car down the quarter mile blacktop, and he does it in World Record Speed (295.08 @ 5.42 sec), the fastest and quickest jet funny car in history. Rich spends his extra hours detailing his GE powered (J-85-5) Pontiac for its’ next competition run. He’s his own mechanic and driver, which demands excellence and detail combined with safety.
Rich spent the past 13 years as a 1st shift teardown inspector on the PW 2000 line. Employed at Pratt & Whitney for nearly fourteen years, Rich has learned that painstaking details are required to keep these much larger jet engines flying. His jet engine experience doesn’t end at the end of the shift. Recently, Rich has taken a new position at Pratt and Whitney, and he is in a training program to become a jet engine machinist, adding to his remarkable career in the aircraft industry.
How does it feel to be behind the wheel of a jet thrust-driven race car? Rich says it’s a little bit scary at first. Rich sustains 4 positive G’s at take-off and accelerates to speeds over 290 MPH in a quarter mile. The brake and chute force to slow him down requires him to withstand a negative G force of 6 G’s at deceleration. This is no place for the weak at heart, nor is there any margin for error.
Rich’s demanding schedule takes him on the road across America and beyond. The Hanna team has traveled as far as Brazil, Canada, and Puerto Rico. It is long hours and a lot of time spent on the road traveling. None of this could be possible without the assistance of his father Al Hanna. Jeff Robillard, another important link in the Hanna team spends his time as Crew Chief. As an important member to the Hanna team, Jeff spends his time prepping the car, refueling, and bringing the jet car to the starting line. Jeff says, “Every person has his job, and no one has time to be laying idle. Preparing for the next run requires focus and precision.” It’s quite a team of professionals to match with his competitors, for sure. Jeff is also a 25-year Pratt and Whitney inspection veteran.
Rich has been brought up on racing. Rich says that, “The real credit has to go to my father, Al Hanna. I guess you could say, I was brought up breathing jet fuel.” Rich’s father still races as part of the team. His weapon is a jet propelled Pontiac Firebird Funny Car, which carries the name, “Top Secret”, now driven by Ken Hall. Hanna Motorsports also fields the famous ‘GOJO’/’BIC Lighter’-sponsored “Queen of Diamonds” 310 MPH Jet Dragster driven by Jill Canuso.
If you want to see these track burning, fire breathing jet cars run, just ask for a copy of their schedules. If you’re lucky, you may be able to catch them on ESPN, ESPN2, SPEED, or Discovery. To be able to work aside of, and share in these accomplishments that the Hanna team has worked so hard for serves as a reminder that the sky is the limit, and we can do anything we wish to do if we try hard enough. Rich receives much support from his family – wife Jennifer, sons JR and Alan, and daughter Megan.
Congratulations to all the members of the Hanna Motorsports Team for showing us that “It can be done”.

Tommy and I have been racing together since the late 70’s. We are more then just friends and co-owners Tommy is like my brother. We took over the race team from my father in the mid 80’s.
We started setting our own goals and have been reaching them with determination, motivation, and hard work, traveling up and down the east coast running NHRA Events and Super Chevy Shows and other events. It’s been a wild ride ever since.
Through the years we've done multiple upgrades to The Broken Arrow's chassis to stay competitive in this sport. In 2011 we ran exhibitions at Maple Grove Raceway and had the quickest run so far 6.84's @ 199.84 mph.Read More About Broken Arrow Racing and John Gentry Here

Christine Hull On Model Mayhem
I have grown up around four-wheelers, dirt bikes, and fast cars. My birth was first announced during a small town car show in Shermans Dale, Pa. My mother worked at the tracks when she was younger, while my father raced on them. Today he is a well known for his body work and restoration on cars. Because of my families involvement with cars and body work, I have become very interested in the cosmetics of vehicles.
Lately however, since I have been working for an automotive parts shop / garage, I have become more interested in the inner workings as well.
I started my modeling career with my father’s 1967 E type Jaguar. Eventually I landed a job with Carlisle Events during the 2011 show season. I worked for all of the shows including Spring, Import, Speed and Performance, General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Bike, Truck, Corvette, and Fall car shows as "Mandy".
I am participating in the upcoming 2012 Motorama bikini contest as well as one of their Greaser Girls.
You can also find me at the 2012 Tuner Revolution showing John Coleman's 1992 Nissan 240sx. Not only that but I had the wonderful opportunity to work with a wonderful photographer from Maverick Creative located in Toronto.
I can be seen soon on hipsandwhips.com as well as many other shows.
I will be on hand all weekend at different locations of the expo center for photo opportunities and will also be available for shoots with cars.
